Sauna & Spa Wiring Adelaide

A sauna is not a normal appliance. A 6kW heater pulls around 26 amps and holds it there for an hour at a time, which is a completely different ask to a kettle or a power point. Nearly every sauna job I do comes down to one question the supplier never answers: can your switchboard actually give that circuit up? Sometimes yes. Sometimes the board is already full and that has to be sorted first. I check that before anything else, because it decides the shape of the whole job.

A sauna we wired in Marden

Home sauna in Marden, Adelaide — Narvi heater connected on its own circuit, wall-mounted control panel and LED strip lighting installed by Amped Up Electrical Adelaide
Marden, July 2026. The cabin was supplied and built by others — our work here was the electrical side: the heater connection on its own dedicated circuit, the wall-mounted control panel outside the hot room, and the LED strip lighting run along the ceiling line. Tested and certified on completion.

What customers say

Highly recommend Amed Up Electrician. Marcus installed a German-made sauna heater for us with the specific requirement that it be configured with commercial controls and very precise electrical specifications. His knowledge really stood out, he clearly understood the manufacturer requirements, load calculations, and safety standards, and ensured everything was installed exactly as required. He took the time to explain the setup, made sure all compliance and safety measures were met, and the workmanship was excellent. The installation was clean, professional, and completed with great attention to detail. It’s clear Marcus has strong technical expertise and experience with specialised equipment, not just standard residential work. Marcus has also completed all the electrical work for our house, and the quality has been consistently excellent. Very reliable, knowledgeable, and easy to deal with. I would absolutely use Amed again and highly recommend him for any complex or specialised electrical work.

Swapnil VP · Google review · January 2026

Marcus is professional, friendly and competent. He identified a significant issue with old electrical work in my house that I had no idea existed. I thoroughly recommend him

Rachel Moore · Google review · April 2026

Had Marcus out to our place in Payneham South to mount a TV and install networking and WiFi access points. Top notch job and everything working great.

What the electrical side actually involves

Most people buy the sauna first and find out afterwards what it needs. Here is the honest version:

Bigger heaters sometimes need three-phase rather than single-phase. If yours does, I will tell you that up front rather than after the hole is in the wall.

Three-phase or single-phase?

It depends on the heater and on what your house already has. Smaller home units are usually fine on a single-phase circuit. Larger ones are often specified for three-phase, and if your property is single-phase only, that changes the job significantly — sometimes into a supply upgrade conversation with SA Power Networks. This is the single most common surprise on sauna jobs, and it is the first thing I check.

Send me the make and model of your heater and a photo of your switchboard and I can tell you which conversation we are having before anyone visits.

Spas and plunge pools

Same principle, different equipment. A spa or swim-spa pump and heater package wants its own protected circuit, and anything around water has additional requirements for bonding and isolation. Plunge pools and cold tubs are usually a lighter load than a sauna but still deserve their own circuit rather than an extension lead from the garage — which is what I most often find in place when I arrive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my switchboard handle a sauna?

That is the first thing I check and it is genuinely the deciding factor. A sauna heater holds a heavy load continuously, so it needs a dedicated circuit with real capacity behind it. Send me a photo of your board and the heater model and I can usually tell you before a visit.

Does a sauna need its own circuit, or can it share one?

Its own. Sauna heaters run at full draw for long stretches, so sharing a circuit with power points or lighting is not appropriate. A dedicated, correctly protected circuit is the whole point of the job.

Do I need three-phase power for a home sauna?

Sometimes. Smaller home heaters are commonly single-phase, larger ones are often specified for three-phase. If your property is single-phase and the heater wants three, that is a much bigger job and I will tell you up front. Give me the make and model and I will check.

Can you wire an outdoor or barrel sauna?

Yes. Outdoor units need a weatherproof isolator, an IP-rated run and the cable protected properly where it leaves the house. Same for a spa or plunge pool out in the yard.

Do I get a compliance certificate?

Yes. Every sauna, spa or plunge pool circuit I install is tested and comes with a Certificate of Electrical Safety on completion. Licensed PGE 305056.

Who does the work?

I do. Marcus, the owner. The person who quotes it is the person who wires it. Licensed electrician on every job — never handed off.
