No Power in Half Your House?

One circuit dead while others work? Here's why it happens, how to troubleshoot it yourself, and when to call an electrician.

Quick Diagnosis: Check Your Switchboard

If half your house has no power, one circuit breaker has tripped or failed. Here's what to do:

Step 1: Locate Your Switchboard

Usually in garage, laundry, or external meter box. Open the cover and look at the breakers (switches inside).

Step 2: Look for Switched-Off Breaker

Most breakers have two positions: ON (up) and OFF (down). Look for one that's in the OFF position or somewhere between (tripped).

TIP: Breakers are labeled (or should be) - "Kitchen", "Bedrooms", "Garage", etc. The one that's OFF = the circuit with no power.

Step 3: Try Resetting ONCE

Push the breaker firmly to OFF (down), then back to ON (up). If it clicks and stays on → power should restore. If it trips again immediately → electrical fault, call electrician.

Why Did My Circuit Trip?

Circuit breakers trip when they detect an electrical fault. Common causes:

Troubleshooting: Find the Faulty Appliance

If breaker tripped but resets successfully, try this to identify the problem appliance:

1. Turn Everything Off

Unplug all appliances on the dead circuit. Turn off all switches.

2. Reset Breaker

If it stays on with everything unplugged → one of your appliances is faulty.

3. Reconnect One At A Time

Plug in appliances one by one. When the breaker trips → that's your faulty appliance. Leave it unplugged and call electrician or replace appliance.

If breaker trips with NOTHING plugged in: The fault is in the wiring itself, not an appliance. This needs professional fault finding. Call an electrician.

When To Call An Electrician

Call immediately if:

Adelaide-Specific Issues

Older Homes (Pre-1990s)

Many Adelaide homes have outdated switchboards with old ceramic fuse holders or early-generation breakers. These can fail without warning. If your home is pre-1990s and experiencing partial power loss, likely time for switchboard upgrade.

Storm Damage

Adelaide storms can drive water into external meter boxes, roof spaces, and wall cavities. If power loss started during/after storm, water damage is likely cause. Needs immediate inspection before restoring power.

Air Conditioning Circuit

Older Adelaide homes often have undersized circuits for air con. If circuit trips when air con starts, the circuit might not be rated for the load. Solution: dedicated air con circuit upgrade.

How I Find The Fault

I'm Marcus—licensed electrician servicing Adelaide metro. Here's my fault finding process:

1. Circuit Testing (20-30 mins)

Test each circuit for insulation resistance, earth leakage, and continuity. This identifies if fault is overload, short circuit, or ground fault.

2. Physical Inspection

Check outlets, switches, and visible wiring on the dead circuit. Look for damage, moisture, loose connections, or burn marks.

3. Roof Space Check (if needed)

If wiring fault suspected, inspect cables in roof space for rodent damage, water damage, or deteriorating insulation.

4. Diagnosis & Quote

Explain exactly what's wrong and give clear pricing for repair before starting work.

Typical fixes: Replace faulty breaker, repair/replace damaged wiring section, rewire circuit if insulation breakdown, install new outlet, dry out moisture damage.
