Power or Safety Switch Keeps Tripping in Adelaide?

Safety switch keeps tripping, or a circuit breaker that won't stay on? Here's why it happens, if it's dangerous, and when you need an electrician urgently.

Is This Dangerous?

YES - if your circuit breaker keeps tripping, there's an electrical fault. The breaker is protecting you from fire or shock.

Call an electrician immediately if:
  • Breaker trips more than twice
  • You smell burning or see smoke
  • Outlets are hot to touch
  • Breaker trips when you use a specific appliance
  • Multiple circuits tripping at once

Why Does My Power Keep Tripping?

A circuit breaker "trips" (switches off) when it detects an electrical fault. It's a safety feature—it's doing its job by protecting you.

Common Causes:

Adelaide-Specific Issues

1. Older Homes (Pre-1990s)

Many Adelaide homes still have cotton-insulated wiring or outdated switchboards. As insulation deteriorates, wiring can short out and cause repeated tripping. If your home is pre-1990s and tripping frequently, you likely need rewiring or switchboard upgrade.

2. Summer Air Conditioning Overload

Adelaide summers = heavy air con use. If your circuit trips when the air con starts, the circuit might be overloaded or undersized. Solution: dedicated air con circuit with correct amperage.

3. Storm Damage

After heavy rain, water can get into switchboards (especially external boards) or roof spaces, causing ground faults. If tripping started after a storm, call an electrician—water + electricity = dangerous.

What To Do RIGHT NOW

Step 1: Turn off all appliances

Unplug everything on the tripped circuit.

Step 2: Reset the breaker ONCE

If it trips again immediately → electrical fault, call electrician.
If it stays on → reconnect appliances one at a time to find the faulty one.

Step 3: If breaker trips again → STOP

Do NOT keep resetting it. There's a fault that needs professional diagnosis.

Never:
  • Put a bigger breaker in to "fix" tripping (fire risk)
  • Bypass the breaker or hold it on
  • Ignore repeated tripping—it's warning you of danger
