Licensed electrician on every job — never handed off. · Drop sheets down, place left clean
Old cotton-covered or rubber cable replaced in Adelaide homes. I check every circuit first and only rewire what needs it. New cable, a safety switch on every circuit, and the certificate of compliance lodged. Licence PGE 305056.
Most of the rewiring I do is in older homes. The house is fine. The cable inside it is not.
Not sure which one you are? An electrical safety inspection tells you what cable you have and what condition it is in.
Old cable was insulated with rubber, often with a cotton braid over the top. You might hear it called VIR cable. Over the years the rubber dries out and cracks. Moving it to fit a new light can be enough to break the insulation off.
I find it in roof spaces, sometimes run through old metal conduit, and sometimes right at the switchboard. At a St Peters home the lighting and power were still on cotton cabling in metal conduit. At an Edwardstown home the cotton wiring went all the way into the switchboard.
Houses from the 1960s and 70s often still have the original board. That usually means rewirable fuses, no safety switches, and a backing panel that may contain asbestos. I remove the old panel and fit a new fire-rated board.
Not every problem is age. Rats chew cable. Insulation gets stripped in the roof. These show up as a circuit that trips for no clear reason. That is a repair, not a rewire, and I quote it that way.
For burning smells, hot power points and sparks, read signs of faulty wiring in Adelaide homes. If something smells hot right now, turn it off at the switchboard and call 0468 008 822.
Every house is different, but my rewiring jobs follow the same steps.
More on the board itself: switchboard upgrades in Adelaide. More on alarms: smoke alarm installation.
Most of the rewires I do are partial. It is not a smaller version of the job. It is the right size for the house.
In a lot of older homes, the power points were updated at some point but the lighting is still on the original cable. Or one or two circuits are old and the rest were replaced in a renovation. I test each circuit and quote only the ones that need new cable.
A full rewire makes sense when old cable runs through the whole house, or when you are renovating and the walls and ceilings are open anyway.
The work can also be done in stages. At the St Peters job, the switchboard was done first. The rewire of the lighting and power circuits followed a month later.
Most people stay in the house the whole time. If you work from home, or someone at home relies on powered medical equipment, tell me and I plan the order around it.
How long it takes depends on how many circuits there are. At St Peters, rewiring one lighting and one power circuit, with five new pendants, took one full day and a short return visit. The switchboard was a separate day. Your quote says how many days to allow.
I do not give a number until I have seen the house. A price from a phone call is a guess, and you deserve better than a guess on a job this size.
These are the things that change the price:
Your written quote lists each part of the job separately. If you want to do it in stages, for example the switchboard now and the circuits later, I quote each stage on its own.

★★★★★We contacted Amped Up Electrical, based on their positive reviews, to do a number of jobs around our home in Royston Park. We found Marcus to be friendly, punctual and thorough. He did a good job replacing an old light in our bedroom, installing new downlights in our bathroom and a sensor light in our driveway. Most importantly, Marcus alerted us to some wiring issues in our roof, which we were unaware of (and took some photos so we could see the problem). He was then able to rectify the issues. The work he did was reasonably priced too. I'm sure we will be using Amped Up Electrical in future.

★★★★★Marcus is professional, friendly and competent. He identified a significant issue with old electrical work in my house that I had no idea existed. I thoroughly recommend him

My workmanship has a lifetime warranty, for as long as you own the property and the installation is maintained. Cable, switchgear and fittings also carry the manufacturer's warranty. Full terms are on the warranty page.
It depends on how many circuits need new cable, how easy the roof space is to get into, what the walls are made of, and whether the switchboard and mains need doing too. I look at the board and the roof space, then send a written quote that lists each part of the job.
Cotton-covered or rubber cable in the roof or at the board, cable with cracked or missing insulation, an old fuse board on an asbestos panel, or circuits with no safety switch. A building inspector or a renovation often brings it up first. I check the cable itself before saying a rewire is needed.
Often just some circuits. In many older homes the power points were updated years ago and only the lighting is still on the original cable. I test each circuit and quote only what needs replacing.
Usually, yes. Work is done one circuit at a time, so only the circuit being worked on is off. The whole house is off only while the switchboard is changed over. I tell you the order of work before I start.
It depends on the number of circuits. At a St Peters home, rewiring a lighting circuit and a power circuit took one full day plus a short return visit. The switchboard was done on a separate day. Your quote says how many days to allow.
Yes. Every circuit is tested, and the certificate of compliance is lodged for the work. You get a copy.
There is no set number of years. It depends on the type of cable and its condition. A safety inspection is the way to find out before deciding.
